Books on Tiles

Low Art Tile - Pennington - If you love antique tiles, then you surely know about the J & JG Low Art Tile Company! And now, finally, there is an outstanding reference book dedicated to all things "Low", including information on the Tile Club, Arthur Osborne and catalog pages of their tile, soda fountains and Plastic Sketches. If you don't already know about Low tiles, then that is even more reason to buy this book! They were one of the most important tile companies to ever exist. 244 pages.

Zanesville Art Tile in Color - Purviance - (out of print) $25 - This is a neat but strange book. About 25 pages, cardboard like paper, and spiral bound. Great for pictures of tiles from Zanesville companies, such as American Encaustic and Mosaic. Text is limited - but the book in general has proved invaluable to me. About 25 pages.

Collecting Victorian Tiles - Lockett - (out of print) $50 - If you buy only one book on English tiles, this is the one! Small format, hard back, and just filled with great photos and accurate text. 239 pages.

Catalina Tiles - Rosenthal - (out of print) $19 - A nice soft cover book, dedicated only to Catalina tiles. Decent photos, line drawings in back. 95 pages.

William De Morgan Tiles - Catleugh - (out of print) $30 - Great soft cover book, dedicated to tiles by William De Morgan and William Morris (English). Text is abundant and excellent, photos abound. Terrific reference. 184 pages.

The Decorated Tile - Austwick (out of print) $100 - An excellent reference book on English tile makers, designers, and their wares. In depth discussions, many photos, and an extremely useful section with tile backmarks. Hard back - 160 pages.

Victorian Ceramic Tiles - Barnard- (out of print) $65 - Another very good tile reference book, mostly dedicated to English tiles. Very different than "The Decorated Tile" . Number 3 on my list of "to buy" for English books. Hard back - 184 pages.

American Art Tile - Karlson - (out of print) $120 - Fabulous! The only book on the market dedicated exclusively to American Art Tile. Thousands of photos, arranged by company, with a good history for each. Hard back - 224 pages.

American Art Pottery - Sigafoose - $25 - Another relatively new, terrific, hard back book on the market. At least half of the items are tile, contrary to the title of the book. Very different than "American Art Tile", as the author had different collecting interests. 272 pages.

California Tile - Hispano-Moresque to Woolenius - $59.95 -Outstanding hard cover book solely dedicated to California tiles. This is book 2 of a two book series. Published in 2004 by Schiffer Publishing, and put together by The California Heritage Museum. There are 248 glorious pages of tiles - great color photos! Each chapter is written by a different author - and "yours truly" wrote the chapter on Tudor Potteries for this book. So, you'll get a signed copy of this book (at least for one chapter!).
